The population of Greece on the horizon of 2050 Interesting for research
In Greece, unlike many other developed countries, we do not have up-to-date population projections based on documented alternative scenarios for the period 2015-2050. The latest projections of the population of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) date back to 2007, as well as credible international organizations (EUROSTAT, UNPP, OCDE, IIASA-VID-OAW-WU), do not cover existing needs. These international agencies, which prepare scenarios for a multitude of countries, can` t work systematically and in-depth by developing alternative work assumptions and scenarios for the population of each country. Their projections took place prior to 2015 and have partially or totally ignored - with the exception of the UNPP - the impact of the ongoing deep economic crisis and apparently not at all the impact of the most recent "refugee crisis" (2015 – 2016). These have made imperative the effort to develop the projections of the population of Greece that would take into account both the long-term trends in the demographic components that determine the reproduction of its population and the recent developments (economic and refugee crisis) and their impact ( in the long and medium time ) on demographic element. In this context, the Laboratory of Demographic and Social Analysis of the University of Thessaly has recently produced (June 2016) demographic projections, whose results are presented here and commented on.
REMOTE is an AAL project that aims at advancing the state-of--the-art in fields of tele-healthcare and ambient intelligence by enhancing the elderly’s home with audio-visual, sensor, motoric monitoring and automation abilities to trace vital signs, activity, behavior and health condition, and detect risks and critical situations, as well as provide, pro-actively and reactively, effective and efficient support at home. This paper presents the project objectives, the approach and principles endorsed, and the expected results. Overall, REMOTE is characterized by: a user-centered philosophy and consistent involvement of users; processes for reaching consensus among all stakeholders; strong commitment to ethical and legal issues; sound scientific and evidence based methods (incl. real context pilots in 6 countries) to measure usability, impact and acceptance of the developments by elderly populations
